At our first stop this morning (5/11) on Charcoal Road a quietly
singing male BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER was the best bird for Frank
Vanslager and I. Other birds included numerous singing LAZULI BUNTING,
CASSIN'S VIREOS and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS. later at a parking
pullout for upper Sanborn - Skyline County Park, just east of the Castle Rock
parking area, we had calling RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES (both sides of the
road but mainly the south side) and a PILEATED WOODPECKER gave a
couple nice calls (one call was the wildest that I have heard).
Later, further west, we were able to spot a Red-breasted Nuthatch but were
never able to find a Pileated woodpecker.
