Folks We did our outing for the SFBBO shorebird
course today, starting at the EEC in Alviso and heading north to the Radio Road
Ponds in White-faced Ibis: Flock of 7 at New Chicago Marsh, they flew
north. About an hour later, seven appeared again, and we assumed they were the
same birds. These then caught a thermal to the south, not sure where they went.
Minutes later a flock of 11 flew by. So probably a minimum of 18, maximum of 25
in three flocks if the two groups of seven were not the same ones. Brown Pelican – On the salt pond behind the EEC. Flew
by. Redhead – a pair, salt pond behind EEC. Wilson’s Phalarope – 5 with a flock of Western
sandpipers, New Chicago Marsh. Red-necked Phalarope – 1 female, State and Spreckles,
Alviso. Glaucous-winged Gull – 4 approx. Salt pond behind EEC,
seems late and a large number for the south bay. Note Marty Sidor who was
taking the class spotted a young GLAUCOUS GULL last Thursday there while I was
putting things together. Several folks went out and had a look at the bird and
confirmed the white plumage and bicolored bill. The best I could do was climb
up to the observation platform at the EEC and saw a large and white (entirely
white, not worn brownish white like a Glaucous-winged) gull, the bill pattern
was a little too far for me to see well. Red Knot – 1 in nice breeding plumage in with a mixed Dowitcher
flock at Black Skimmer – Tricolored Blackbird – 1 male, Palo Alto Duck Pond. Many ducks were still around, including both Scaups, and
lots of Ruddy Ducks among others. Regards Al Alvaro Jaramillo Biologist Milpitas, CA 95035 No virus found in this outgoing message. |
