I spent a couple of hours there later in the morning, but didn't pick
up any hint of a Chat. I walked around the south-most two ponds, but
none of the ponds I could see had any water in them. I did hear two
RING-NECKED PHEASANTs up that way, and also had a pair of GADWALL in
a drainage ditch by the first field. I found some, but not all, of
Mike's listed species. One addition: a CASSIN'S VIREO was singing
near Bloomfield Road. (Perhaps I should say "Solitary", since I didn't
manage to see the bird.) Also, I heard one BULLOCK'S ORIOLE in this
same area. Overall, activity was evidently lower than it had been
earlier.
On the way down I stopped at the Coyote Creek Golf Course, where I
saw two GREAT-TAILED GRACKLEs (male and female) and quite a few
CANADA GOOSE families.
After lunch I paid my first visit to the BALD EAGLE nest near the
south end of Calaveras Reservoir. One adult was standing guard, and
I briefly saw one youngster raise its head and look around, but there
was no other "action". Fionally, at Arzino Ranch, the 2 CATTLE EGRETs
continue. Also there I saw BURROWING OWLs at three well-separated
locations (4 birds in all) and one AMERICAn KESTREL.
