We did our annual wildflower hike a bit early this year. Both
wildflowers and birding were terrific!!
Two LAZULI BUNTING males were seen singing from the tops of bushes along
Mt. Umunhum Rd. as we hiked to the Barlow trail. A selasphorus
hummingbird whizzed by and the first of many WARBLING VIREOS 15, heard.
The best area on the trail was at the Guadalupe headwaters. Here I found
a CASSINS VIREO pair, 2 TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS and HERMIT WARBLER pair. The
HEWA fed in a small tree along the trail, then flew to a small oak tree
where I watched them, hoping to find a nest. Singing ORANGE CROWNED
WARBLERS 13, and BLACK HEADED GROSBEAKS 8, were numerous along the
trail. Other birds of interest were Cal. Thrasher 3, Wrentit 9, Hutton's
Vireo 8, Purple Finch 5, Pacific-slope Flycatcher 4, Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher 2, Western Tanager 3, and Ash-throated Flycatcher 3. BLACK
THROATED GRAY WARBLERS 5, were heard in at least five area's along the
trail and were seen well three times. One of the resident pair of GOLDEN
EAGLES was perched on a tower and later soaring. A late male VARIED
THRUSH was seen on the trail at the edge of the woods near the parking
lot. Softly calling unknown species of owl were heard in several wooded
areas. WESTERN WOOD PEWEE, YELLOW WARBLER 2 more CASSINS VIREOS were
heard along Bertram Road.
