All,
This morning (5/1) Frank Vanslager and I got a late start at Smith Creek,
best birds today included WESTERN TANAGER, CASSIN'S VIREO and a couple
flocks of LAZULI BUNTING. Other birds included a small flock of male
AUDUBON'S WARBLERS (at least 3), an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, WARBLING VIREO and
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK. On Monday (4/30) we had a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT
in the trees and field immediately south of the southern most pond in the
Gilroy Water Treatment Plant. The bird was being very quite, singing very
little and skulking in the lower branches of trees and bushes, Frank
finally managed a brief view as it flew away from a bush near us. The
water levels in the ponds is being kept very low as required (by Vector
Control?) in an attempt to minimize mosquito growth and the
spread of Avian Flu. There were very few birds in the area; we had a
couple SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, a female CANVASBACK, a COMMON MOHRHEN, CINNAMON TEAL,
GADWALL and MALLARDS. No sign of a Bank Swallow :-( The best bird on
Sunday's field trip (4/29) to Steven's Creek OSP was an OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER that seemed to be all over the place but managed to go unseen during
the trip by most (Rich Page had good views from the parking lot before the
trip). Several WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE were well seen, nesting birds
included an ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD (nest looked only half done) and a RED-SHOULDERED
HAWK (on a nest in a eucalyptus tree near the parking
lot). See what's free at AOL.com. |
