Last Tuesday I spotted a Western Gull at Santa Cruz Pier with an old
style four digit "Aviso Bird Band Wash DC USA" leg band.

My question is when did these bands stop being used? From what little I
could dig up on the Web, it seems to be about 1970 which might make this
bird close to one of the oldest of its species ever recorded. (The
record seems to be just over 27 years.) I'll have to wait for the
results from Patuxent to be sure though.
The pier also produced two lifers for me: Brandt's Cormorant and Pigeon
Guillemot. Common Murre, Red-throated Loon, and Common Loon were also
present.
