Folks,
This morning, 3/21/07, I stopped by the Palo Alto Baylands. As in
the past few weeks, there were many Black-crowned Night-Herons around
the Duck Pond and the ranger station, including some carrying nest
material to nests. I did not see any Great or Snowy egrets today,
but one CATTLE EGRET was in the palms near the Duck Pond. The bird
appeared to be in basic plumage.
Later, I stopped by Shoreline Way in Mountain View and counted 17
Great Egrets in or on nests in 7 sycamores that are just beginning to
leaf out. Most nest had single birds, although a few had pairs. One
bird was sitting on a nest as though incubating. All the birds I
studied showed the spectacular light green lores of breeding Great Egrets.
