Hello All,
Yesterday, 3/19/2007, a Red-breasted Nuthatch
called energetically, if briefly, from pines at Monte Bello's gate 5. One
individual was also heard here on 3/12 and on 3/5; I believe this is a resident
bird.
On Friday 3/16, I stopped by the gate 5 pond at
about 5pm with a couple of Hidden Villa colleagues and we were treated to a
flyover Osprey almost immediately. It headed north into San Mateo County. It (or
another?) was seen again, also on a northward tack, 10 minutes
later.
Bushtits were finishing up nests at Hidden Villa
this week - 2 efforts were noted. Warbling Vireos began singing here on 3/19,
which is within 24 hours of what I've noted in most recent
years.
Moments ago, I watched the resident Common Raven
pair flying from our sheep enclosure with beakloads of wool, signalling that
they are in the finishing stages of nestbuilding. (They do this every year -
it's fun to see them gleaning from the barbwire.)
Apparently, I mistakenly included everyone on SBB
in a bug note I sent to Rich Greene a few days ago, in which I speculated
(badly, it turns out) on the ID of a damselfly observed at the gate 5 pond. Rich
took a look and confirmed that the early species there is a Western Forktail,
assuming that we saw the same thing, of course.
Best regards to all,
Garth Harwood
