[SBB] Ogier Ponds/Calero Reservoir 03-17-07

All,

I led my Palo Alto Adult School birding class to Ogier Ponds today.
HIghlights were a pair of WOOD DUCK, two COMMON MERGANSERS, GREATER
and LESSER SCAUP, two WESTERN KINGBIRDS, many nesting TREE SWALLOWS,
a few nesting NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS. There were also a male
BULLOCK'S ORIOLE in a large sycamore along the entrance road 2-3
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS were found in the underbrush by the creek, and a
single LARK SPARROW showed up on the model airplane runway. We also
had nesting RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS as we walked down the paved trail
toward the underpass.

We then caravanned to Calero Reservoir where we rounded out our
Swallows collection a bit with BARN and CLIFF SWALLOWS. On the
reservoir we found more COMMON MERGANSERS, a small group of COMMON
GOLDENEYE, a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE and an Aleutian CACKLING
GOOSE. As we returned to our cars, we also found a pair of CALIFORNIA
THRASHERS, heard (but did not see) a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER. A female
MERLIN made a brief appearance over the hills, as did a GOLDEN EAGLE.
