I count my backyard Purple Finch each day. Today two males and ten
females were seen. Then I found my first backyard White-throated
Sparrow!! It was a first winter bird, feeding on the ground with Golden-
crowned Sparrows.
Later I birded in Quicksilver Park at the Webb Canyon entrance with Joan
Brauch. It was very birdy the short distance we walked on the New
Almaden Trail. I counted five Orange-crowned Warblers and surprisingly a
Cassin's Vireo!! It seemed a bit early for this bird, but its loud,
clear, quick phrases were distinctive. I believe several CAVI were found
here last March as well. Six Hutton's Vireos were calling and many
Purple Finch were seen or heard along the trail. Our 38 species included
Violet Green and No. Rough winged Swallow, a flock of Wild Turkeys, a
pair of Hairy Woodpeckers, Cooper's and Sharp shinned Hawk, one Varied
Thrush and two Townsend's Warblers.
Yesterday an adult female Merlin was perched on a snag at Coleman and
Meridian.
