Realizing that it was past prime Owling time but encouraged by Mike
Mammoser's recent post Pat Kenny, Roland Kenner, Frank Vansalger and
I tried for Owls in Monte Bello last night (3/8). Unfortunately,
lacking Mike's skill and having some equipment problems we were only able to get
some distant WESTERN SCREECH OWL calls on the Canyon Trail overlook
before its junction with the Indian Creek Trail. Just a note to those
trying to use recorders with lit displays; they will severely impact
your night vision and it gets very, very dark when walking under the
trees. Generally, we try not use flashlights except to find nearby
calling Owls or when walking out after Owling. There's a time and a place
for everything but last night in Monte Bello was not it for Owling.
