[SBB] Uvas Canyon County Park

Today (3/4/07) Barry Langdon-Lassagne and I (with our kids in tow)
took a quick jaunt around a few of the parks in the southeast
section of the county. Not much of note, as the glorious spring
weather brought out so many people, but there were a couple worth
mention.

At Chesbro reservoir, the water was extremely low but the numbers of
COMMON MERGANSER were again quite high. I counted 55, eleven of those
being male alternate plumage. They were in a mixed flock with
approximately 100 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS. A lonely, single HORNED
GREBE, still firmly in basic plumage, was a surprise to me, as I've
usually seen those only much closer to the Bay.

Calero reservoir was swarming with jet skis. There was nothing of
note visible from the boat ramp, and we gave it up as hopeless.

Uvas Canyon County Park was less overrun with humans, but only
slightly so. Best sightings were several dozen VARIED THRUSH still
hanging around (mostly female plumage -- five females seen for every
male!) and a pair of BROWN CREEPERS in the campground adjacent to the
restrooms. No sign of the hoped-for American Dipper on the trail up
to the waterfall, but as heavily trafficked as the area was, it might
have been hiding out.

May your birding days be jetski-free!

Ginger Langdon-Lassagne
