[SBB] Cooper's Hawk nest at Arastradero Preserve



My wife and I have made two trips to view the fledgling Cooper's  
Hawks at Arastradero Preserve which were reported by Ron Wolf in the  
06/21 digest. On our latest visit, 06/21, only one fledgling was on  
the nest and it's head was in almost constant motion as it was  
ripping and tearing on something that was mostly out of sight below  
the level of the nest. This went on for almost the entire 40 minutes  
we were there. Since we didn't see any adults show up and could only  
count two other fledglings on the limbs nearby, we began to fear for  
the fourth sibling.  After I was able to view the images on our  
computer however, I could see that the fledgling's meal was a  
California Ground Squirrel. Whew!

  I'm guessing that the reason the bird on the nest appeared so  
hungry was because it's siblings had already eaten and it had to work  
hard to get enough to eat from the "leftovers". Some photos are at:
