Re: [SBB] Indian Creek Trail sparrows etc. 6/13/2007

Garth Harwood wrote of some enticing sightings from June 13 along the
Indian Creek Trail (ICT) in Montebello OSP. I visited the area late-
morning June 17 -- unfortunately, I was unable to get there earlier,
and was only a bit hopeful of refinding his birds. As it happened, I
did not duplicate his luck with the Sage Sparrows; I didn't detect any.
I walked up as far as marker 0.5 on the ICT, then retraced my steps back
to the Canyon Trail and Page Mill Road.

I had at least 6 singing Lazuli Buntings on this walk (2 seen). A
Grasshopper Sparrow was still (as in Garth's report) singing from the
hilltop above Indian Creek marker 0.6. I also heard a probable singing
Rufous-crowned Sparrow uphill from the hairpin turn, although it was
rather distant. As I walked back down, somewhat disappointed, I had
almost reached the wide turn about 0.1 miles down from the hairpin when
I heard a Black-chinned Sparrow singing uphill. It was not far off
(surely below the upper section of trail I had traversed above the
hairpin), but the contour of the hill prevented me from seeing it. It
sang only about 4 or 5 times, at 12:30 PM (!), but I didn't hear it
again (or when I had been up higher). I think this was lower down than
previous reports I can recall.

Other species found on the walk: Ash-throated Flycather, California
Thrasher, and Black-throated Gray Warbler (male and female in separate
locations). And the weather was just right, with a breeze keeping things
fairly comfortable.
