Dear SBB List:
Could you please take a few seconds and vote to keep 21-acre Half Moon Bay Park as planned? To vote, go to the on-line poll at the Half Moon Bay Review (deadline is Tuesday, June 12)?
www:hmbreview.com
the poll is in the upper right hand corner of the main page
You do not have to live in Half Moon Bay to vote to save a threatened park.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is the situation:
Two years ago Half Moon Bay bought a 21 acre
parcel adjacent to
Highway 92 from Nurserymen's Exchange for a community park.
Peninsula Open Space Trust provided a
no-interest loan of $3.1
million for the purchase, and offered to work with the city to find
funding sources.
The council went through an extensive planning process and came up
with a nice plan with both active (soccer field, baseball diamond,
basketball area) and passive uses such as trails and restoration of
the riparian area along Pilarcitos Creek. Half Moon Bay and the
coastside have a huge need for sports fields just like the rest of
our area, and this park will help with that need.
Last November the council majority shifted away from pro-environment
and pro-park to pro-development. The current Council would like to
sell the property. They claim the city has no money to fund the park
improvements. However, there are potential sources of grants such as
the Coastal Conservancy that they haven't even approached. You can
read more about the hastily called closed session last Tuesday, and
how they didn't quite get to the "sell" decision on:
www.coastsider.com.
The loan from POST will become due in October, 2007. POST has
offered to extend the loan for a year, on the proviso that the city
commits to developing the park.
Committee for Green Foothills is writing a letter to the City
Council, and will send an action alert to our members on the
coastside, asking them to weigh in as well.
However, right now, it is important that people VOTE in the HMB
Review poll. Please go to www:hmbreview.com before Tuesday and vote!
The poll is in the upper right hand corner of the main page.
If you could send this on to other park supporters, that would be great. Thank you for your attention.
