[SBB] Alviso Burrowing Owls

Hi all:

My Burrowing Owl survey route had me on Piedmont,
Sierra, Marsh, Felter, and Calaveras Roads today. Not
a Burrowing Owl to be found. So to get my fix, I went
to Alviso. 2 BURROWING OWLS in New Chicago Marsh just
east of the Railroad tracks visible from the entrance
road to the EEC.

3 more BURROWING OWLS at Arzino ranch, spread out
north of the fenced corral area. A 4th Burrowing owl
was along the sidewalk 100 yards or so north of
Jubilee Christian Church along Disk Drive.

My "territory" has me w/in 2 miles of the Bald Eagle
nest on Calaveras, so it was impossible to resist. One
juvenile was perched on the edge of the nest. No
adults in sight. If this has been recounted elsewhere,
my apologies, but it was new information to me (from a
consulting biologist from EDAW... Jon King?): the
adults nested in a tree last year, in close proximity
to this year's nest, but the nest failed. The move to
the power tower is unusual. This is the only Bald
Eagle nest in a power tower owned by PG&E. A webcam
for next year is being considered. The nest itself
slopes away considerably from the road, which accounts
for why the juveniles (2) can be completely hidden at
times.

LARK SPARROW on Marsh road. GRASSHOPPER SPARROW on
Sierra Road, along with LAZULI BUNTINGS (2), and
numerous WESTERN KINGBIRDS were the highlights.

Good birding,
