Sorry for the delayed report.
On Saturday 6/2, for the Palo Alto SBC, Ashok Khosla and I covered the part of Montebello OSP - parking lot -> sag pond -> Black Mtn summit -> Indian Creek Trail -> Canyon Trail -> parking lot.
It was a beautiful day and great birding.
Highlights:
SAGE SPARROW in the big patch of chapparal on the Indian Creek Trail. From the summit of Black Mountain, take the Indian Creek Trail. You get into a large section of excellent looking chapparal. After maybe a quarter of a mile or so, there is a break in the chapparal vegetation before a hair-pin bend.
We had the Sage Sparrow here, downslope from the trail before the hair-pin bend.
We were never out of earshot of singing LAZULI BUNTINGs the whole morning. At least 5 (conservative count) singing GRASSHOPPER SPARROWs.
WHITE-THROATED and VAUX’s SWIFTs together near the Black Mtn Summit. A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER at the backpack camp.
2 CALIFORNIA THRASHERs near the antenna installation and 2 more on the Indian Creek Trail. Also PILEATED WOODPECKER, BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER etc. among ~45 species.
