All,
This morning Frank Vanslager and I had three juvenile PEREGRINE
FALCONS on the power towers in the Sunnyvale Water Treatment Facility (two
on the same tower and a third two towers away). At Arzino Ranch we
had a CATTLE EGRET (with the horses) and a Burrowing Owl while the first
island on Salt Pond A16 had a "pair" of adult BLACK SKIMMERS (one much larger
than the other). Today was also the first time that I've really
noticed the breeding plumage on PIED-BILLED GREBES (that is the black at the
base of the chin and throat as well as the black at the base of the lower
mandible). Even I have noticed the black band on the bill before,
duh!, but not the whiteness of the bill, the eye-ring and the
lores. Quite striking for a non-notable.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
