[SBB] Pajaro River etc.

On Saturday and Sunday, 21 and 22 Jul 07, I visited
the Pajaro River. Most of the good birds were seen on
Sunday with Rich Page and John Hutz. We saw the
apparent female ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. It looked very
much like Tom Grey’s photo of the bird that Bob and
Frank saw – that is, it had heavily streaked sides and
flanks, dark blackish/brown lateral crown stripes, and
a very white supercilium. I didn’t see the center of
the breast, but Rich got a glimpse of it and said that
it was also streaked. The adult male BLUE GROSBEAK and
one juvenile were still present. We had scope-filling
views of a juvenile GRASSHOPPER SPARROW sitting on the
fence line for some minutes. Three LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES,
probably a family group, were up the grassy hillside.
Other interesting birds were: a WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, a
couple WILSON’S WARBLERS, and singing SWAINSON’S
THRUSHES.

On Saturday Dean Manley and I had nice looks at a
COYOTE, which was howling at us from the hillside, and
a BOBCAT lounging in the crotch of a willow tree about
20 feet above the ground.

Later on Sunday, Stephanie Ellis and I had a LESSER
YELLOWLEGS and a SNOWY PLOVER in New Chicago Marsh. A
PEREGRINE FALCON was raising havoc with the peeps and
phalaropes there.
