[SBB] Renzel Wetlands: Gnatcatcher; Falcon eating Bat

Today 1/29/07, at 2:00PM, on my second try I got the BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER thanks to Ron Wolf's specific directions.

Later, as I walked back to the car, I had a small bat fly overhead.
Since I
rarely see bats in the Bay Area, I wanted to get a good look at it when
I was distracted by a PEREGRINE FALCON that flew in. By the time I got
the
Falcon in view, it had the bat in it talons and flew to the top of the
plyon
on the north west corner of Renzel wetlands. It never went into a dive -
the bat was slow enough that the Falcon appeared to have simply plucked
it out the air.
It proceeded to eat it - holding it in its talons and biting off pieces.
Then it just sat there for over 10 minutes until a WHITE-TAILED KITE
dove at
it and then it flew off towards the Byxbee landfill.

Nice bit of natural drama just feet away from Hwy 101.
