Title: Suburban Varied Thrush
This message refers to my north Los Altos property: On Thursday, Jan. 25 I thought I spotted, somewhat disbelievingly, a Varied Thrush perched briefly on a leafless liquidambar branch in my garden. As the sun was behind the bird, it was a poor glimpse and then the bird flew. Today, at 8:48 a.m. a male Varied Thrush lighted on the grass in my back yard and was soon joined by a female. They remained for about ten minutes, foraging in loose soil and mulch. They reappeared briefly about 25 minutes later. This is the first time in thirty years of living at this address (a small yard close to town center) that this species has appeared. Does anyone have thoughts as to why now?
Virginia Willcox
