Many thanks to Ron Wolf for his wonderful pictures and explicit directions
re the wintering Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher along the path to the ITT gate in
Renzel Wetland.
This is just to signify that this bird is not always so cooperative.
Inflamed by Ron's post, Bill Bousman and I converged, with cameras, on the
spot this morning between 8 and 9 in glorious early sunlight. The bird did
not appear. But as Gen'l MacArthur said, I shall return!
I did get to hear, see, and photograph what to me is a rare phenomenon (and
Bill concurred) -- a CALIFORNIA TOWHEE SINGING, up on a coyote bush. These
homebodies are in my back yard and neighborhood all year long, and yet I
hardly ever hear, much less see, one singing. We have bouncing ping-pong
balls, but though I rarely see the source, they always seem to have the
timbre of a Wrentit. I believe Cal Towhees only sing when a male is
actually unpartnered, and evidently this isn't often or for long with this
sedentary species.
