All,
This morning I had an AMERICAN BITTERN, a HOODED MERGANSER and a GREEN
HERON in the last 100 Yds of the Charleston Rd Marsh nearest Shoreline
Ave. I was alerted to the AMBI as it crashed thru the dry reeds in an
attempt to avoid my approach, I then stood near where the sound came from and in
less than a minute the Bittern flew out of the reeds and was lost to view in the
evergreens along Shoreline Rd. During a walk around the marsh I had at
least nine WILSON'S SNIPE flushed from the edges (three flew in a group)
and twice as many HERMIT THRUSH were well seen. No sign of the
Northern Waterthrush :-( I also came up empty handed, in this respect, on
a quick trip down Stevens Creek from La Avenida. Earlier a
SANDERLING was with the "peeps" on the southern edge of the Alviso impoundment
(between the RR tracks and the eastern edge of Salt Pond A12). A SAY'S
PHOEBE was near the Alviso Marina Parking lot.
I should also note that yesterday morning right after I melted
the ice in our bird baths a female plumaged PURPLE FINCH joined
the birds drinking at the bath. This morning I had a gorgeous male and two
female plumaged PUFI getting a much need drink. Lots of AMERICAN
GOLDFINCHES hanging around.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
