[SBB] Slaty-backed Gull HMB, Santa Clara Gulls.

Folks

Today SFBBO (San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory) held the field trip for its inaugural Gull identification Workshop, and it was a great success. Ten species of gull, including a second cycle Slaty-backed Gull at Venice Beach, Half Moon Bay right at the end of the day. We topped the day with nice studies of Comet McNaught, something you don’t see every day! We did not see a Glaucous Gull at Half Moon Bay today unfortunately.

Photos of the Slaty Backed Gull and some comments are here (it is the top series):

The other gull highlight was seeing a juvenile Glaucous Gull at the EEC in Alviso, Santa Clara County in the morning. Most frustrating here was that a white winged gull with dark bill, paler base seen at a distance which we needed to be closer to identify (albino, or Iceland Gull?). Unfortunately it flew towards the dump before we could get that better view. Also here were a male with a female Eurasian Wigeon. Another interesting sighting was a Barn Swallow at the Palo Alto Duck Pond.

A great day of gull study, and even lifers for the participants of the workshop, you can’t beat that. Even the cold weather wasn’t as bad as advertised.

Good birding
