Today, 9 Jan 07, I went to Alviso and the EEC to look for year birds. There was no sign of the Ruff, although Roland and Pat had it just a little while before I arrived. After Dean Manley and I left them on the A16 levee, we stopped to scope out A18 across the slough and managed to pick out a GLAUCOUS GULL sitting on the boardwalk there. It was a distant look, but the field marks were of a large pink-legged whitish gull with a black-tipped pink bill.
After a few unproductive stops I ended up at Shoreline Park, where the BRANT was with a large flock of CANADA GEESE at the northeast corner of the grassy hills that bound the south side of A2W.
Shoreline Lake had at least 1 male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, Charleston Slough had 23 BLACK SKIMMERS, and Adobe Creek had a male BLUE-WINGED TEAL.
At the end of Geng Road the golf course had the 2 SNOW GEESE and 5 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GEESE (4 adults).
Walking into Byxbee Park at 3:45 pm, one of the SHORT-EARED OWLS was perched on the fence line bordering the dump. It made a sortie over the fenced-in field before disappearing over the hill towards the ITT field.
