All,
Feeling lucky today 1/3/07, I decided to try for the Short-eared Owl
that eluded me on New Year's Day. On the way over to Byxbee Park I
stopped at the dirt pullout at the northwestern edge of the Emily Renzel
Wetlands, along the frontage road south of Embarcadero Road. Richard
Jeffers found a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher partway along the paved path to
the fenced facility behind the wetland pond during the Palo Alto
Christmas Count on 12/18/06, and I decided to see if it was still
around. Before I had walked halfway down the path, I saw the BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER on top of a coyotebrush on the left (north) side of the path.
Climbing the hill at Byxbee Park a few minutes later, I noted a
SHORT-EARED OWL perched atop the landfill fence. A group of birders had
their backs to the bird as they scoped the flood control basin. I
alerted them to the owl, and they replied that they had just observed a
Short-eared Owl out over the flood control basin - so it looks like two
birds are still around.
