Re: [SBB] New Year's Eve Sightings at Byxbee and Shoreline Lake

I didn't think that Eared Grebes were notable species. There are many of them at Shoreline Lake every day. Horned Grebes can also be found there reliably, but there are only a few. I stopped there this morning to look for pelicans. I only saw one Brown Pelican, but I didn't walk around the whole lake. It flew around above the mass of cormorants feeding, and then settled down on the the platform with the solar panels in the middle of the lake. The other notable species for me was a male Belted Kingfisher.

I then went to the Palo Alto Baylands Interpretive Center at high tide to look for rails. I found one Clapper Rail, very close to the boardwalk. Photos are here:

At Byxbee, at about 4:30, we tried to find the short-eared owl and the cackling geese, but didn't find them. We ran into a man who saw a Clapper Rail uncharacteristically wandering around in the marshes, and who had seen 6 Cackling Geese earlier in the day, but it appeared they were gone by the time we arrived. We did see a beautiful WESTERN GREBE in the lake over the hill as well as several AMERICAN PIPITS on the way up the hill along the fence. On the previous day, we saw about 20 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS at Byxbee as well, as well as an AMERICAN KESTREL.
