[SBB] Common Mergansers at Lexington Res.

At 2:30pm on Sunday (2/25) Barry Langdon-Lassagne and I made a quick
stop at Lexington Reservoir to look for anything interesting. It was
raining lightly and the temperature was in the upper 50's. Signs of
spring's approach were everywhere.

On the lake itself, a large flock of COMMON MERGANSERS were moving
together across the water and actively feeding. We counted sixty or
more total birds on several different occasions, although the
constant diving made precise counting difficult. Our smallest count
was 58 mergansers at the surface at one time; the highest number was
64. The flock was primarily female/juvenile plumage individuals with
reddish heads, grey flanks and white throat patch. Some of these had
minor crests while others were more rounded. Of the approximately
sixty birds, ten were wearing male alternate plumage (deep green
heads, white breast & flanks, dark upper backs) with six of those
having intensely red bills that seemed to nearly glow in the dim
light of the misty rain.

EARED GREBES were also plentiful on the lake, some coming into
alternate plumage already. Two female BUFFLEHEAD were also sighted.
An OSPREY was heard but never seen. There were the expected VARIED
THRUSH (1 male, 2 females, and 2 more seen without gender ID). One
male was singing for us beautifully.

Good birding,
Ginger Langdon-Lassagne
