I stopped by the Santa Clara Valley Water District at 1 pm today. In
moments the Osprey flew in and perched in a Sycamore in the north east
corner. It was quite a sight with snow capped mountains in the
background. The Sora was on the east side of the island in the main
pond, swimming out in the open again. Five No. Rough winged Swallows
flew along the river channel. No alarm call was sounded for the soaring
Osprey or Red tailed Hawk but was heard for a high flying Sharp shinned
Hawk. A male American Kestrel was perched in a tree top. I remember him
in the same location last spring. Three Cinnamon Teal and a f.
Canvasback were the only unusual ducks on the pond. I was quite close to
a male Belted Kingfisher before he flew off.
I found the Brant under the freeway perc pond snoozing among many Canada
Geese. It can easily be overlooked with its head tucked. Today it was on
a sandbar at the west side of the pond near an apartment complex. An
immature male Common Goldeneye, always alone on the pond, has a brown
head and white cheek patch.
My backyard continues to attract Purple Finch. Today I had 4 males and 6
females eating seed off my deck rail. I put seed along 6' of rail which
can accommodate a number of birds. One male PUFI has a splotch of black
on one flank. The PUFI are quite aggressive, holding their own with Band
tailed Pigeons.
