[SBB] Lake Cunningham Park

Today's Audubon field trip to Lake Cunningham Park was a success, much to the surprise of field trip leaders Phyllis Swanson and myself. Last week's scouting trip was pretty miserable, so we were delighted with favorable weather and 58 species.

An Osprey circling the lake was our first bird. Eventually it caught a large fish and was not seen again. Several of the eleven White Pelicans had huge breeding horns on their upper mandible. White throated Swifts and Tree Swallows soared overhead and seven Eared Grebes were seen on the lake with a short list of ducks. Our best sighting was a pair of Hooded Mergansers in the creek. A calling Hutton's Vireo in the willows on the north side was unexpected. Two Say's Phoebes and several Western Bluebirds were spotted by the group. Fox Sparrow, Common Yellowthroat, Coopers Hawk, Red tailed and Red shouldered Hawks were other favorites. Anna's Hummingbirds and Yellow rumped Warblers seemed to be everywhere. The eastern foothills were finally green with many trees in bloom.
