Finally, after quite a few misses: when I arrived at the Calero
boat launch at 8:55 this morning, an adult BALD EAGLE was perched atop
a tree to the west! It stayed there until 9:10, at which time it flew
off and disappeared in the southwest part of the resrvoir. Scoping to
the east end, I saw a group of 7 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE; there were
only about 50 CANADA GEESE. Ducks within my range included about 12
COMMON GOLDENEYEs, plus a number of SCAUP and BUFFLEHEAD, but I only
found one distant COMMON MERGANSER.
Next, at the Almaden Reservoir, my high counts of WOOD DUCK from
a vantage point at the large pullout were 20 males and 10 females.
The same area had about 19 RING-NECKED DUCKs and a pair of
COMMON MERGANSERs.
At the SCVWD pond along Almaden Expressway, the OSPREY was seen
both hunting and perched, and a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK circled, gaining
altitude before it disappeared. There were 8 COMMON MERGANSERs in
the Guadalupe River, and the pond had about a dozen RING-NECKED DUCKs,
both SCAUP species, etc. No sign of a Peregrine today. The water
level in the River is way down from the last time I was there.
