All,
Thanks to some sharp eyed birders today's SCVAS field trip to Coyote
Reservoir was much more productive than the low water conditions would seem
to warrant. Best birds included a white-striped WHITE-THROATED SPARROW (on
the eastern edge of the main campground), a PEREGRINE FALCON
(unaged, hunting and perched on the south shore), GOLDEN EAGLES
(soaring over the ridges east of the reservoir), a MERLIN (perched on the
hillside above the dam), a ROCK WREN (working the upstream, eastern half of the
dam face), VARIED THRUSH (main campground), and several WOOD DUCKS (in a pond
below the dam and swimming just upstream of the reservoir). Most of the
other expected species were seen including RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER, COMMON
MERGANSER (a hundred or more with a large number of adult males), MEW GULLS, a
WESTERN GREBE, RED-TAILED HAWKS and RED-SHOULDERD HAWKS. Big misses
include Wild Turkey (always seen before?), Purple Finch and Bald
Eagle.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
