I spent some time on Tuesday at EEC photographing the Phalaropes and
seeing what else was out there. As others noted, it was pretty quiet
-- only "unusual" birds were a single lone ruddy (male, bright blue
bill) in the channel next to the boardwalk, and a duck I can't
identify that was working on the remnants of the algae in the SE
corner of the salt pond -- plumage was dark grey with black wing
uppers, grey bill and black eye -- if someone else who was there can
help, I'd appreciate it, or I can post a photo (I'm sure I'll feel
silly after, but I'm curious). I also saw a good number of great
blue herons -- at least six individuals, including three in flight at
once, which I haven't noticed there previously. Lots of white
pelicans and gulls, and a goodly number of red-necked phalaropes in
the channel near the boardwalk. I had one peep that was being
harrassed by the others and I hoped it was a semi-palmated, but no,
it was a western among least.
I also spent some time up in the butterfly garden looking for the
warblers. I found three -- one which I got a good enough view to say
it was probably a first year yellow warbler (given others had found
them first), but not a good enough view to be comfortable saying
definitely a yellow, and two common yellowthroats. All were in the
oaks, and were sharing them with a flock of bush tits and two song
sparrows who kept hogging the limelight...
I'll have to give the yellow another try, hopefully this time without
a dozen other birds flitting around in the tree at the same time...
