[SBB] New Chicago and Salt Pond A16

Folks:

I made a CW loop at New Chicago Marsh this morning, 8/26/07, starting
from the new gate and going out the RR spur and coming back by the
south levee of A16. I have little of note to add to Kris Olson's
report. On this overcast morning, A16 was attractive to many
piscivorus species, whereas a week ago there were only a few. My
estimates included: 879 AM. WHITE PELICANS, 28 BROWN PELICANS, 202
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, 178 GREAT EGRETS, and 186 SNOWY
EGRETS. The ubiquitous "hangers on" were CALIFORNIA GULLS--I
estimated 4,583. I counted 9 LESSER YELLOWLEGS spread widely in the
marsh. Phalarope numbers were up from last week, I tallied 129
WILSON'S and 228 RED-NECKED. Just as Kris reported, I did not see
any young BLACK SKIMMERS on island #2 (1 was there yesterday). At
island #1, I ran into Dave Weber and Peggy Don who pointed out one
youngster for that pair (I'm glad Kris saw both). One BURROWING OWL
was north of the entrance road just beyond the RR tracks, as is
typical. Walking back to the EEC lot with Dave, Peggy, and Kirsten
Holmquist, we saw some VAUX'S SWIFT over the marsh--my best count was 3.
