[SBB] Yellow-breasted Chats in Gilroy

South Bay Birders,

This morning (27 Apr) I checked the South County Regional Wastewater
Authority plant in Gilroy, checking in at the office before birding the
ponds and Llagas Creek. Highlights were 3 singing male Yellow-breasted
Chats (1 in the willows southeast of the southernmost settling "pond" [now
dry] and 2 along Llagas Creek just southeast of this pond), a Bank Swallow
(over the deeper ponds near the entrance gate), 2 Chipping Sparrows with
White-crowns along the Llagas Creek levee (I have seen very few migrant
Chipping Sparrows on the valley floor), and 8 Northern Harriers (plus two
nests with eggs).

Few shorebirds were present -- other than Killdeer, I had only single
Spotted Sandpiper and Greater Yellowlegs, 5 Wilson's Snipe, 12 Long-billed
Dowitchers, 2 Least Sandpipers, and 4 Black-necked Stilts.

Waterfowl included a lingering male Canvasback and a pair of Wood Ducks in
addition to the more regular species.

In addition to the chats, passerines along Llagas Creek included lingering
Hermit Thrush (1), Lincoln's Sparrow (1), White-crowned Sparrow (19),
Golden-crowned Sparrow (3), and Yellow-rumped Warbler (1), as well as 2
Swainson's Thrushes, 9 Wilson's Warblers, and 1 Orange-crowned Warbler.

Good birding,

Steve Rottenborn
