I got nice looks at a Taiga type female MERLIN perched on a tall Cedar
tree north of 85, on the west side of the perc. pond at Chynoweth this
morning.
I heard an unusual quick, low zeet call and found a LINCOLNS SPARROW at
the Santa Clara Valley Water District near the weather station. A young
Killdeer seen on the east side of the river channel had doubled its size
in a week. Canada Geese with goslings and Mallards with very young
ducklings seen, as was 1 male Cinnamon Teal, male Common Yellowthroat,
and an Orange-crowned Warbler singing from a willow. An active Black
Phoebe nest found under a concrete overhang near the dam was well hidden.
A quick trip into Quicksilver Co. Park from the McAbee entrance was
productive this afternoon. About 20 yards up Mine Hill trail I heard
sparrows calling from the grass. I pished out a TAN STRIPED WHITE
THROATED SPARROW. The throat was whiter and yellow lore more pronounced
than one seen a month ago near this location. Four ORANGE CROWNED
WARBLERS (2 seen), 2 WRENTIT, 2 ASH THROATED FLYCATCHERS, 2 HUTTONS
VIREOS, and a PACIFIC SLOPE FLYCATCHER were heard before the meadow. I
believe I heard a Chipping Sparrow calling near the Mine Hill
trailhead. It's call was louder, and faster than Dark-eyed Junco. I'll
have to return for that bird.
Golden-crowned Sparrows are still singing in my backyard. A Pacific
slope Flycatcher was heard yesterday and Black headed Grosbeak heard
today in neighbors tree.
