Late this afternoon, around 5:40, there was a large flock of swallows above
the Event Center on the San Jose State campus - about 25 birds, most of them
CLIFF SWALLOWS. Amongst them were two VAUX'S SWIFT and one WHITE-THROATED
SWIFT. They moved on before I could fetch my binoculars from the car, but
the size difference between the two species of swift was obvious, and the
larger bird had the white-throat. I have seen Vaux's in previous years at
this exact same spot, around this time of year. They need to time this
better: now is too late to take spring semester classes! Yesterday I
watched one of the City Hall PEREGRINE FALCONS performing some mid-air
soaring.
