[SBB] Smith Creek, Migrating Warblers

Folks:

This morning, 4/13/07, I visited Smith Creek on the Mt. Hamilton
Road. I walked up behind the fire station and then south (Manzanita
Trail) to the first height of land and returned. I then went north
to Twin Gates (Bonhoff Trail, sp?) and walked back down the road to
the CDF station. Migrants were mostly on the Manzanita Trail, where
I heard a CASSIN'S VIREO, and saw an ORANGE-CROWNED, a singing
NASHVILLE, a singing BLACK-THROATED GRAY, and a quiet TOWNSEND'S
WARBLERS. Beyond these singles there were 5+ Yellow-rumps and a
couple of Myrtles.

Back at the CDF station, I ran into Peggy and Bill Don and Ann
Verdi. After describing my experiences, they went off on a wild
warbler chase and I walked along the creek and enjoyed about 6
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS including one with nest material. I also had
three singing WILSON'S WARBLERS there to add to my list.

Going home, I stopped in Halls Valley and added a couple of COMMON
YELLOWTHROATS to bring my warbler day list to 7. No empids for the
day. I saw one VARIED THRUSH along the road on the western side of
Halls Valley. Maybe the Dons and Ann found more warblers and some
empids on their walk.
