I didn't start birding along Fortini Rd. at the base of Santa Teresa Co.
Park until after 10 am when it finally quit drizzling. Stopping at clumps
of trees along the road and I found 17 Lark Sparrows, 3
Lincoln's Sparrows, 3 Golden crowned Sparrows, and over a
dozen White-crowned Sparrows. Even got a few House Sparrows at the end of
the road.
From the parking lot on San Vicente I heard a W. Meadowlark song, saw
Am. Kestrel and a Say's Phoebe. A pair of Golden Eagles were
soaring over the Santa Teresa Hills which I pointed out to several
mountain bikers.
At the ranch house across the street near the Calero Creek trail gate and
I found 6 Yellow Warblers, and 3 Yellow-billed
Magpies, but not the Chipping Sparrow I saw on Sunday. The trail
itself was quiet but I could hear the seet call of many sparrows in the
brush. On the sagebrush hill were dozens more White-crowned Sparrows,
many singing, 3 Wrentit, 1 Cal. Thrasher, and two more Say's
Phoebes. A small flock of 9 Western Bluebirds flew overhead several
times. A flock of 13 Horned Larks flew in and fed on the ground. I
heard half a dozen Rufous-crowned Sparrows and finally saw
four when I walked a short way up the Stile Ranch trail before leaving.
Along the creek I found Belted Kingfisher, Song Sparrow, No. Flicker, and
a Huttons Vireo. Nearly all other expected species were seen except for
White tailed Kite.
