When I arrived at the channel between the two ponds at the Sunnyvale
WPCP at 4:20 PM yesterday (Sept. 26), the young Franklin's Gull was on
one of the levees. I was able to scope it at leisure for about 20
minutes. It even returned after being flushed by a jogger. On the second
such incident, the bird was stimulated to begin feeding in the channel:
flying slowly into the wind to feed, covering about 100 meters, then
quickly flying back and repeating. This went on for more than 15
minutes, passing within about 25 feet of me on many occasions. This
was for sure the best detalied look I've ever had of this species --
a wonderful show. [I'll send details to Bill.] Just before 5 PM, it
finally settled down in the water on the east pond; I lost track of it
after 5:05 or so. I stuck around until 5:25, hoping some unusual
Tern(s) would join the Forster's, but none did.
The Cowbird flock in this area has grown to about 100 birds. And
not a cow in sight!
