Re: [SBB] Eurasian Collared-Dove in south valley

Rick,

Over the last two years, I've been regularly seeing up to 10 or so birds on the west side of San Martin, mostly along Santa Teresa Blvd. between California Avenue and Highland Avenue.  These birds have been slowly spreading out, as I have now seen them as far north as Watsonville Road in Morgan Hill and as far east as Monterey Road in San Martin.  I believe these birds originated from the west side of the valley, rather than from the Maple Ave. area east of 101, as they were at least initially concentrated near a house that had a pen containing collared-doves, along Santa Teresa just south of San Martin Ave.  There are several pale and variegated birds in this group.

Subject: [SBB] Eurasian Collared-Dove in south valley

Today at 11:30am I had a Eurasian Collared-Dove south of Morgan Hill, on a telephone pole at Santa Teresa Boulevard and California Avenue.   This is across the valley but really just a few miles away from the Maple and Hill intersection where they have been reported often.

I haven't kept good records of my Eurasian Collared-Dove sightings, but I have seen them in widely scattered areas of the south valley.   I do have a few records.  I saw one on Nov. 11, 2005 in San Juan Bautista, just west of the mission.   I saw 2 on Memorial Day, May 29, 2006, at 3rd St. and Mariposa in San Juan Bautista.   Earlier on that same Memorial Day I saw 3 on Lone Tree Road in Hollister, near Pan Tempo Way.  This part of Lone Tree Road is still in the valley flats, and the birds were hanging around some large agricultural warehouse buildings.
