[SBB] Continuing Franklin's Gull (maybe)

Folks:

I started off this morning, 9/20/06, at the Sunnyvale Baylands,
looking unsuccessfully for yesterday's Tennessee Warbler along with 5
or 6 birders. My counts of 3 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS and 21+ YELLOW
WARBLERS is low as I did not cover many areas where these birds were
foraging. At sunrise, a male BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER was in the
willow 30 m west of the playground. At the east end of the park, I
saw two adult and an immature YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, my first of the
season. Also first fall arrivals for me were an adult WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW and a HY GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW.

I then cycled out to the oxidation ponds at the Sunnyvale WPCP where
I met Dean Manley and Pat Kenny walking back from the central
dikes. They had seen the FRANKLIN'S GULL in the central channel near
the pumps, but not the Sabine's Gull or Black Tern found
yesterday. I also found the bird here and then cycled around the
east pond to look for any aggregation of terns (none). When I came
back, there was Jack Cole, but no Franklin's. The Franklin's has
black on the tail typical of a 1st-winter bird, but a cursory look at
some photos suggests that the wing coverts are of the next cycle. I
also saw a SPOTTED SANDPIPER and counted 62 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE.
