I birded south along the Alamitos Creek trail from the Camden Parking lot
this evening. As I was about to cross the bridge I thought I should stop
to see what's around me. Right in the middle of my binocular view was a
male Wood Duck. That's not likely to happen again!!
A little further along I came across a small warbler flock. One bird was
an immature Blackpoll Warbler. I followed it to the creek to watch
it feeding near the tops of trees and then back to the trail.
Occasionally it would feed lower for brief close looks. This sighting was
just south of Parr course 15, parallel to Pfeiffer Ranch Rd. As I
walked to the end of the equestrian trail and back I was constantly
surrounded by the call of Vaux's Swifts. Either they were following me or
there were hundreds of them. At one point I counted 50 flying over a
Coopers Hawk. Later the same Coopers Hawk chased after an Acorn
Woodpecker for the longest time and finally gave up. They always seem to
go after that bird!! Five more Yellow Warblers were seen and a Golden
Eagle flew high over the trail.
