I returned to the Santa Clara Valley water district this evening around 6
pm to look for migrating warblers. I first checked the pond near the
south parking lot and found a colorful adult Sora feeding at the
waters edge. A Common Moorhen was feeding further north on the same pond.
I walked around the front of the building and started pishing for
chipping Yellow Warblers, when I heard loud chirping. An immature
Osprey watched me from its perch at the top of the large Sycamore
tree on the island facing Almaden Ex. It looked rather small and had some
white feather edging and a dark necklace.
At the back of the property I met Penny and Dave Kiel looking for the
Brewers Sparrow. They followed a flock of Nutmeg Mannikins which were
perched in the cattails. Kathy Parker arrived also looking for the BRSP.
We didn't see it tonight, instead saw juv. Brown headed Cowbirds in
various stages of molt, Common Yellowthroats, a Belted Kingfisher, and
Green Herons. I called out "Peregrine" to Kathy after a falcon
like bird flew up river scattering birds. After much discussion we
couldn't decide if it was a Merlin or a Peregrine Falcon. About the same
time a Red shouldered Hawk was being harassed by a male Am. Kestrel as it
perched on an apartment building roof. I waited around for the mystery
bird to reappear but gave up at 7:30 with the setting sun. I never did
make it down to the gravel road to look for warblers.
