This morning, arriving at the Crittenden Lane bridge over Stevens Creek
to start a walk upstream, I heard an unfamiliar call from the creek bed.
I soon found the bird: a brilliant male Orange Bishop, perched in the
reeds. Bill Bousman caught up with me near the lone euc, and said he
also had one Bishop near the bridge -- only it was an immature/female
type, which he took to be a juvenile because of the fresh, crisp plumage.
(He has a photograph.) On my way out later, I saw what must have been
this same bird, which was rather bright and did have those plumage
characteristics; I didn't not the adult again. Both of my sightings
were just downstream of the bridge; the presumed youngster then flew
farther downstream.
I think Bill can give a fuller report of the riparian area than I
can. I'll just mention two heard-only birds that he may not have
encountered: a Downy Woodpecker, and a Wren (north of the lone euc)
which I think was probably a House Wren.
