All,
This morning Frank Vanslager and I first checked out the CCFS
Waterbird Pond which once again has water (and waterbirds) in
it. Weed growth, in and out of the pond, make it more difficult to bird
but it looks like the Gulls, Ducks and Sandpipers don't mind. Nothing
special there today but now we can at least hope that something will
show up. We then checked out the Coyote Creek tidal mud flat (full of
water this morning) and Salt Pond A18. The Salt Pond was absolutely
overflowing with most of the "Usual Suspects," never seen so many
birds in the pond before. Our last stop of the day was the mouth of
Stevens Creek where the exposed mud flats were also overflowing
(with Sandpipers). Most unusual were the large numbers RED KNOTS, at
one point I counted 64 actively feeding REKN on the west side of the creek
outlet and there were at least as many more REKN sleeping among
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS on the east side of the creek outlet (much harder to
correctly identify and count these half hidden birds). Earlier on our
way out to the bay an adult PEREGRINE FALCON was on one of the power
towers.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
