Over the past seven days I've twice seen an apparently white breasted
drake mallard along Stevens Creek near Crittenden bridge (towards the
bay). I've a fair photo at Flickr now showing him with a flotilla of
other mallards. He's generally the same size and shape with the same
green head and yellow-green bill. The white ring around the drake
mallard's neck is replaced by a white chest -- it does not continue
around the entire neck. His body is darker and browner, and the tail
shows less white.
Simply a variant? Photo at http://www.flickr.com/photos/
