[SBB] a few more birds from CCFS...

All,

As Steve noted, I birded with him at CCFS for 2.5 hours this morning 10/1/06. A few birds up towards the now dry waterbird pond that Steve did not mention include 1 WOOD DUCK in Coyote Creek opposite the northeasternmost sewage pond, 3 VIRGINIA RAILS and 1 SORA opposite the waterbird pond, and a singing male ORANGE BISHOP in the reeds in the northeast corner of the waterbird pond (apparently present for over a month here according to Steve). Also left off Steve's list were RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, of which I had at least 3 (and Steve undoubtedly had many more).

On my way back south to the banding trailer, I was able to locate 2 to 3 VAUX'S SWIFTS with the big swallow flock, including one that spent plenty of time gliding instead of flapping over the sludge ponds (Chimney Swift-like behavior). None of the ponds adjacent to the levee are filled with water, but the northernmost of the next row of ponds visible from the levee had 320 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and 1 leucistic NORTHERN SHOVELER. A MERLIN was perched in the riparian corridor opposite the banding trailer.
