Early this morning I went to Rancho San Antonio for a short hike where I experienced:
- a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK calling from afar and then flying overhead
- a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET chattering and flashing its brilliant ruby crown repeatedly!
- a SPOTTED TOWHEE scratching through the dirt and leaves
- a CALIFORNIA TOWHEE stuttering through its metallic "chink" call and then flying over the trail
- a WHITE-TAILED KITE nearly still in the sky with its white tail backlit and looking so delicate amidst the early morning light
- a COOPERS HAWK perching in a bare tree with an ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD perched above
- a CALIFORNIA THRASHER sitting in clear view on a wire, singing its heart out for over 5 minutes, a highlight of the morning!
- a flock of HOUSE FINCHES flew into a small tree for a minute, then flew off
- a WESTERN MEADOWLARK perching at the pinacle of the highest conifer
- a WESTERN SCRUB JAY perching atop the second highest conifer
- a BLACK PHOEBE perching on the corner of a fence, flycatching from time to time
- an AMERICAN KESTREL perching atop a utility pole took off, pursuing a small bird which got away
- a flock of CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES foraging throughout a group of trees
- an ACORN WOODPECKER pecking away low on a granary snag
- a NUTTALL'S WOODPECKER singing its trill in the forest
- a MORNING DOVE sitting next to EURASIAN STARLINGS on a wire
- a STELLER'S JAY with its distinguished silhouette perched in a conifer
- a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW looking east, with the sunlight illuminating its white crown
- a small group of WILD TURKEYS crossing the trail, though most of the turkeys seemed to be in hiding today (hmmm....)
Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving,
Karen DeMello
