The John Nicholas trail in Sanborn park was fine for birding this
morning. Pine needles, heavy with dew, were falling like rain. Our first
bird was a heard only Winter Wren. Further along the trail
another WIWR was seen on a tree stump. Dozens of Varied Thrush
were heard calling and several seen as Tom Cochrane and I birded the
trail to Ranch Lake. At least a dozen Hairy Woodpeckers were seen or
heard. One Downy Woodpecker and several N. Flickers were also seen. A
dozen Hermit Thrush were heard and several seen in Madrone. Today Brown
Creepers were heard only. Flocks of Townsends Warblers were difficult to
see flitting in the tops of tall Douglas Fir. One Huttons Vireo was found
but Ruby crowned Kinglets seemed to be everywhere. A flock of Band-tailed
Pigeons were briefly seen flying overhead.
At Ranch Lake an active Belted Kingfisher, Am. Widgeon, Bufflehead, Ruddy
and Ringed-necked Ducks were highlights. A Sharp-shinned Hawk was seen
over the lake. As we sat at a picnic table, a dark Merlin tried to
pick a Black Phoebe off its perch. Tom spotted a few Banana slugs and a
nice California Newt along the trail walking back to the car.
